Early February 2009

I have been watching closely for the first shoots to poke out of the ground. Patience is NOT my strong suit! Today, with the rain and overcast skies, I wasn't too hopeful. I had walked to the garden while talking to my father on my cell phone. Deep in conversation, I checked the tarp covering the rototiller, making sure it wouldn't blow off if the rain should start to come down. When I had returned to the house, just ending my phone call, I realized I had forgotten to look for peas coming up. Drat!! Had to leave for a piano lesson in town, so didn't have time to go back.

After the lesson, I went to Lowes and picked up about $300 worth of electrical wiring, valves, pvc fittings, etc., to get the rest of the trench work done. Then I drove home, but didn't go in my driveway. Instead, I drove to the garden and got out. I bent over the first bed of peas and didn't see much. So I took a scoop of dirt off the top and, sure enough, there was a pea getting ready to send it's first shoots into daylight! I let out a squeal of joy!!!

HURRAY!!! Then I checked the other beds ... so far we have peas and lettuce! I expect the beets and carrots will be along within the next week or so!!

This is when things start to get really fun!!
